Inspiring Journey: Richard Demers
Studio life
The inspiring journeys initiative aims to highlight members of our teams who stand out for their diverse backgrounds and unique experiences.
What is an inspiring journey at Frima?
It is a professional path that reflects both personal and professional growth. It can include career evolution, impactful involvement, alignment with the company’s values, and more.
Richard is one of the talents who have grown with Frima over the past several years. Beginning as a 2D animation intern, he gradually evolved into the role of Lead Game Designer. His journey, shaped by diverse projects and great collaborations, perfectly illustrates the variety of opportunities and the career growth Frima has to offer.
1. Richard, tell us about your journey at Frima
I did an internship at Frima following my training in 2D animation, and I was fortunate to be hired at the end of it. At that time, the studio had only a few employees. Later, I became a project manager. I had the opportunity to contribute to several projects of various types and scales. Over time, I evolved into a role as Game Designer, then Lead Designer, thanks to the skills I was able to develop throughout my journey. I particularly enjoy the broad, generalist nature of this role. It has now been over 20 years that I’ve been at Frima.
2. What do you like most about Frima and why?
What I like about Frima is that we are not limited to just one way of doing things. The organization has evolved a lot over the years, constantly reinventing itself to remain competitive. I have always felt that I had a direct impact, both in my role and on the projects. Frima has remained open to change and always ready to listen to its people and adapt to their needs.
3. Which of Frima’s values do you feel most strongly about?
I am often associated with the value of entrepreneurship. I strive to do my best, both with our partners and with my colleagues. In my opinion, you can’t improve if you don’t put your heart into what you do.
4. What advice would you give to someone starting out in the profession?
First, you need to build your network and work on prototypes to create a strong portfolio. If you are working in a company and looking to progress, don’t be afraid to ask questions or make mistakes. The video game industry moves so quickly that you can’t expect to succeed on the first try every time. The key is to learn from your mistakes.
5. What was your first impression of Frima when you arrived?
From the very beginning of Frima, there was a warm atmosphere and the excitement of creating something cool. Even though the studio has evolved a lot, I would say it’s still somewhat like that today. Our president, Christian, has always known how to bring a touch of fun to the workplace and foster a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.
6. What is a typical day like in your role?
I don’t have a typical day! It all depends on the progress of the project and the size of the team. The bigger the team, the more time I spend on planning and coordinating with other departments, rather than on hands-on design work.
7. What is your favourite video game ever?
I have four! Lately, I’ve spent over 1000 hours on Slay the Spire. Then there’s Starcraft, for its competitive multiplayer side. Civilization 3 also makes the list: I couldn’t leave out a strategy game. And finally, Super Mario World, a childhood classic I played endlessly! It’s thanks to that game that I developed my love for platformers.
8. What other departments do you work with the most on a daily basis?
The job of game designer touches on many aspects of development. We work closely with programmers, who implement the systems we design, but also with UI/UX designers. Our role is to imagine the player experience, while UI/UX designers determine the best way to bring it to life. We provide them with lists of information to communicate to players, and they figure out the best way to present it. This can vary depending on the type of game: for example, in an action role-playing game (ARPG), I work more closely with animators.
9. What has been your favourite event or activity since you joined Frima and why?
I really like project team parties that have a friendly vibe. That doesn’t stop me from also enjoying activities the studio organizes for everyone, like Frimageeks, sports, and more.
At Frima, it’s the people who make all the difference. Whether it’s through their projects, their attitude, or their team spirit, employees are at the heart of everything we create. Want to learn more about our culture? Take a look at our careers page.
