Inspiring Journey: Véronique Leclerc
Studio life
The Inspiring Journey initiative aims to highlight members of our teams who stand out for their diverse backgrounds and unique experiences.
What is an inspiring journey at Frima?
It’s a career path that reflects both personal and professional fulfillment. This can include career development, involvement that has had a positive impact, alignment with the company’s values, etc.
Today, we highlight Véronique, whose journey is truly extraordinary! Having first studied anthropology, she later followed her instincts to specialize in digital technology. By doing so, she carved out a place for herself in the gaming world and charted her unique career path. Moreover, Véronique stands out for her involvement in the industry’s women’s community.
1. Véronique, tell us about your journey at Frima.
I have a rather atypical background, coming originally from the field of anthropology. I joined Frima as a Business Development Analyst, a position I still hold today. During my academic journey, my goal was clear: to combine anthropology with the world of video games, although few people believed it was possible. I have had a passion for video games ever since childhood. I wanted to understand the impact of technology through the lens of anthropology. When I set a goal, I like to work towards it. So, I dared to complete my master’s degree on a topic related to video games, specifically on players’ experiences in virtual reality.
In my role as an analyst, my work involves gaining an understanding of the market, players, their expectations, their experiences, etc. Over the past few years, I have broadened my position and its scope by closely collaborating with Jimmy Lemay (Vice-President, Market Development and Business Strategies) and Frédéric St-Amour (Studio Director, Product Development and Creative Strategies). My role consists of two facets: market-oriented business analysis (positioning) and supporting the business intelligence team. Among other things, I analyze audiences and their characteristics. I have acquired a solid understanding of the market and developed strong interests related to the field. I also became an ambassador for Women in Games. The place of women in the industry and the associated issues are important to me.
2. What is your fondest memory of working at Frima so far and why?
My most cherished moments are tied to the days organized for brainstorming with the business intelligence team and collaboratively shaping the department. These are unifying moments that help build strong bonds between us and foster a sense of commitment. I also enjoyed the Frima Gala 2023 during the Annual General Meeting, where the achievements of different teams and the ambassadors of Frima’s values were celebrated. Finally, I had the opportunity to visit the University of Ottawa in October 2024 to give a presentation about my role to anthropology students, showcasing the diversity of job opportunities within anthropology. These are all wonderful memories made possible thanks to Frima!
3. Which of Frima’s values do you feel most strongly about?
Kindheartedness. At Frima, you can truly feel this value, notably through the wide range of benefits and activities offered, but also in people’s behaviour. When I arrived, I immediately felt welcomed, because people are genuinely kind. I have strong connections with my colleagues, and the people at Frima truly embody our values.
4. What advice would you give to someone starting out in the profession?
Plenty of networking events are available. Landing your first job in the video game industry is not always easy. You should try to build connections with people in the field through networking events like the Flambeau, events organized by La Guilde du jeu vidéo du Québec, etc. Don’t be afraid to break the ice and start a conversation. I would also suggest following people on social media (for example, LinkedIn) and interacting with them.
5. What was your first impression of Frima when you arrived?
What stood out to me when I arrived was definitely the kindness and openness of the people. It’s always stressful to enter a new field, but everyone I met was there to help and welcome me. Just by going to lunch in the common area where everyone gathers to eat, I was quickly included in the conversations. I soon felt comfortable in my role because I knew the people I worked with would support me. It’s truly inspiring to be able to share and collaborate without any expectations in return.
6. What is a typical day like in your role?
A typical day is always a little atypical! I often start my day by reviewing industry news (reports, research findings, trends, competitor updates, articles, etc.). Then, I contribute to market studies, audience analysis, and IP (intellectual property) research. I analyze the reports to draw connections with our reality, identify trends, and determine what is beneficial or should be considered for Frima’s business decisions. My role also includes monitoring what’s happening in other studios like ours. For example, last year, I wrote a report on artificial intelligence, highlighting how it impacts the industry and identifying practices to watch and integrate.
7. What is your favourite video game ever?
I have to mention World of Warcraft, which I’ve been playing since 2005. It’s a game that marked my teenage years and continues to resonate with me today. I’ve made friends through this game and even introduced some of my friends to it. It’s a classic!
8. What other departments do you work with the most on a daily basis?
I mainly collaborate with the product managers on the business intelligence team. These are people who are involved in game development and who stay informed about market trends (for example, monetization in games: what kind of structure would be interesting to add to the game?). I also work extensively with creative directors, because once we have a game concept, I need to ensure the ideas align with industry trends.
9. What has been your favourite event or activity since you joined Frima and why?
The Christmas parties are hard to beat! They’re evenings that go by quickly and are always a lot of fun! I also enjoy the annual general meetings, as they’re a great way to get a broader update on what’s happening at Frima, our goals, and where we’re heading, while also taking time to show appreciation for our colleagues, highlight achievements, and more. These events are also opportunities to get to know our colleagues in a new light.
In 2024, Frima introduced themed months to enhance the employee experience. I had the chance to be the ambassador for Diversity and Inclusion Month, and I enjoyed the experience.
